The romance of aging: rerer's new series, Sailcloth, reveals its unique character
Share

Hello, I'm Hasegawa, a YUEN support staff member.
There's been a huge boom in vintage clothing lately, and it's really surprising to see the prices of denim soaring.
Models from a certain era that were once sold cheaply in second-hand clothing stores are now skyrocketing in price, and terms like "post-vintage" have even been coined. It just makes you realize that this is what it means to grow old.
When I think back on why denim is so attractive, I think it's not only the history it has accumulated and the rarity of each model, but also the way the material ages over time.
I own so many pairs of jeans that I can't even count how many there are, but the way they age varies greatly depending on the brand, age, size, how often you wash them, etc.
Some denim shows strong changes called whiskers or fading, while others fade cleanly and evenly. In addition to the characteristics of the material, further changes occur depending on how you wear and care for the denim. In a sense, the history and story of the owner is engraved into the denim. That is the greatest charm of denim.
Men especially love things that change over time. I also love anything that is sturdy and changes over time with heavy use. When I think of things that change over time, the first things that come to mind are denim and leather. You can also enjoy the changes that woodwork and silver undergo over time.
There are many ways to enjoy the changes that occur over time. Speaking of which, my grandparents splurged and bought my daughter a school bag made of cordovan (horse buttocks leather). I thought cordovan was a bit of a waste for an elementary school student, but recently I heard that there are services that will remake school bags so that they can be used even after graduating from elementary school. The joy of passing something down to future generations is also due to the durability of the material and the changes that occur over time.
What we would like to introduce this time is a new series from YUEN that uses rerer's used yacht sails (sailcloth).
Not only is the material durable, but sailcloth is also a third option that you can enjoy as it changes over time, making it something we can confidently recommend.
◆What kind of material is used yacht sail (sailcloth)? Unique and unique.

I have never been on a yacht, but there have long been brands of miscellaneous goods that use yacht sails (sailcloth), so I had a general idea of what sailcloth material felt like.
I was excited to hear that rerer was going to create a new series using sailcloth, but when I saw the finished product, my expectations were pleasantly exceeded.
First, sailcloth
・Durability
・Shape retention
・Lightweight
・Waterproof
・UV resistance
It is a material that has these properties. Obviously, if it tears (durability), it's no good, and if the sails of a yacht stretch (shape retention), it would be a disaster. It goes without saying that it needs to be lightweight and waterproof, and it would be no good if the fabric were to fall apart easily due to UV rays (UV resistance).
It's simply an incredibly durable fabric. The texture is very hard and crunchy, something you won't find in regular nylon products.
However, rerer is an upcycled brand, and the sailcloth we used this time was "used." It was formerly used by a high school yacht club. It must have been used quite hard, so we were looking forward to seeing how it would change over time.
When you actually look at them, you can see that the hard, crunchy material has been used for a long time, and some parts have become worn, dented, and soft. Some materials have a skeleton-like appearance, and there are truly a wide variety of types.
Yacht sails are decorated with letters, marks, and other designs so that they can be identified even from a distance. Some products have these designs incorporated into them, which adds to the atmosphere and creates a positive sense of individuality and uniqueness.
Furthermore, at rerer, in addition to the sailcloth's natural white color, we also dye it. When dyed, unevenness in the dye appears due to wear and tear, creating interesting colors that seem to reveal the story of the sailcloth you have used up until now.
Since the item is already "used," it will have aged and will be dyed again to highlight the changes that have occurred over time. What will happen if the item is used further?
The colors I ordered this time were beige and black, which will change over time. The Sailcloth series will change its appearance even more with use, making it a must-have for those who love aging.
◆We want to enjoy the changes that occur over time, so we create items that you'll want to use every day.

The Sailcloth series being released this time is full of items that you can use every day and will allow you to enjoy the changes that occur over time.
As we make various purchases every day, when we look back, there are many things that we have been using for five, ten, or even more years.
It's like a companion that exists every day as a matter of course.
The things that survive like "partners" in my life are sturdy and reliable tools even after wear, and they show interesting changes over time.
The Sailcloth series is a series that gives you the feeling that it will become such a partner.
Please be sure to check it out.
