Great for outdoor festivals! How to choose comfortable shoes and recommended items
Share
As summer festivals approach, along with that unique sense of excitement, a thought often pops into mind: "What should I wear on my feet?" T-shirts and hats are easy, but shoes can be surprisingly tricky.
In fact, the first time I went to a festival, I just wore my usual sneakers. I was fine until early afternoon, but by evening, the soles of my feet felt incredibly heavy, and every step brought a dull ache from blisters. All thoughts of enjoying the music were gone.
After that experience, I genuinely came to believe that "you really need to think about your shoes for a festival."
In this article, with insights from YUEN planning team member Mita's experience, I'd like to casually summarize how to choose the perfect shoes and key points for summer festivals.
Why are shoes important? The unique environment of a summer festival

Summer festivals are primarily held outdoors. Grass, gravel paths, mud... in addition to ground conditions completely different from the city, sudden weather changes and temperature fluctuations are also major factors.
When I was new to festivals, my shoes got soaked in a sudden downpour, and my feet were covered in mud. My favorite white sneakers were ruined.
Also, at festivals where you spend a lot of time standing or walking around, the strain on your feet is greater than you'd imagine. While it may seem minor, your choice of shoes can make your day either comfortable or a nightmare. I truly felt that shoes are "equipment" at a festival.
Ideal shoes for summer festivals

What's needed for your feet at a festival isn't just shoes that are "good enough to walk in." Your feet will be under surprisingly more strain than you think, from standing for long periods, walking on muddy paths, or sudden rain.
Therefore, you'll want to choose shoes with the following features:
- Good cushioning to prevent fatigue
- Non-slip outsole
- Breathable material like mesh to prevent stuffiness
- Water-repellent/waterproof specifications for rain
- Easy to put on and take off (also great for camping or breaks)
I used to feel that "if I prioritize functionality, the design might suffer a bit..." But recently, there are more and more functional sneakers that are both stylish and perfect for festivals, expanding the joy of choosing.
How to choose comfortable sneakers

To choose shoes that are comfortable to wear all day, the insole and upper structure are very important. In particular, insoles that firmly support the arch of your foot and shoes designed to securely hold your heel make a huge difference in how tired your feet get after long hours of walking. If you can find a balance between lightness and fit, it will be even more comfortable.
I used to think, "They're a bit heavy, but the cushioning is good, so it'll be fine," and chose sneakers with sturdy soles. However, when walking around a large venue like a festival, that "slight heaviness" can be surprisingly burdensome. When moving between stages or standing for long periods, my feet would feel incredibly heavy by the end. I sometimes felt I couldn't manage without frequent breaks.
Also, one often overlooked issue is blisters. If the material is too stiff or doesn't fit your foot shape, you might experience pain in your heels or the balls of your feet later in the day. I've had the experience of hastily picking "any shoes will do" in the past and then having to use tape for first aid during a live performance.
Ideally, you should try them on and walk around a bit. Trying them with socks of a similar thickness to what you'd wear on the day of the festival will give you a better idea of the fit.
Rain protection! Check for waterproofing

The weather at summer festivals is truly unpredictable. It can be sunny in the morning and suddenly rain in the afternoon.
Once, I went out trusting the weather forecast without any preparation, and it poured during the live show. My shoes got soaked, and every step made a "squishing" sound, which was incredibly uncomfortable. On top of that, I got blisters, and the walk home was miserable. Since then, waterproofing my shoes has become essential.
Recently, sneakers made with high-performance materials like GORE-TEX are highly recommended. They block water while allowing moisture to escape, keeping your feet dry and comfortable.
While "waterproof" used to be associated with unattractive designs, there are now many stylish waterproof sneakers available. Choosing earthy colors can also help conceal dirt. They're perfect for everyday wear too.
If you absolutely want to wear your favorite sneakers, using waterproofing spray is an option. However, make sure they are thoroughly dry before wearing them, so prepare them the day before.
More than just shoes! Tips for staying comfortable at festivals

Choosing the right shoes is, of course, important. But that alone might not be enough to fully prepare for a comfortable festival experience.
I recommend using cushioned socks and fatigue-reducing insoles. These alone can make a huge difference in how tired your feet get.
Also, a foldable, lightweight pair of sandals can be very convenient. You can quickly change into them during tent stays or breaks, allowing your feet to relax. They also fit easily into any gaps in your luggage, making them easy to carry.
And most importantly, take frequent breaks. If you stand continuously, your feet will swell up before you know it. Even a light stretch every 30 minutes or sitting down and elevating your feet can make a difference in how much fatigue accumulates.
A little bit of effort and ingenuity can multiply your festival enjoyment many times over!

Conclusion

What you wear on your feet at a festival is truly important. The right pair of shoes can lead to memories of "that was the best!", while the wrong pair can leave you feeling disappointed, thinking "I can't take it anymore... I just want to go home." They may be just shoes, but they make all the difference.
But actually, with a little experience and ingenuity, summer festivals can become much more comfortable. Walkability, fatigue reduction, and adaptability to weather — just by getting these small points right, your satisfaction for the day will be completely different.
For anyone attending a festival, please don't underestimate shoe selection. Find a pair that suits your style and how you enjoy the festival. When your feet are comfortable, you'll surely have more time to truly enjoy the music!
